Hello friends and lovers of art!
The Studio Freelove Artists Collective had its inaugural meeting this week! There were so many incredible people working in so many different mediums, including painters, animators, musicians and so much more! I was personally starstruck by how talented everyone is! We started with a short tour of the studio and its amenities (such as the supplies, kitchen, photo suite, audio room, and film screening area), then broke the ice with some pizza and artist themed bingo.
I am excited to announce we are working on setting up a music recording and podcasting space for our artists to use, we have currently put up sound dampening and put down some very comfy couches, recording equipment is coming soon!
It’s only been a couple of days since the first artist meeting, and people are already working on some awesome projects. I talked to artist Caroline R., she usually works with trash and sculpture materials, but she has been exploring screenprinting her designs onto clothing. She says “I fell in love with printmaking taking a class and doing copper plate printing, but it felt like there were a lot of rules like ‘Oh you have to do it like this or press this hard’. I like doing it now because I’m in charge and I can sort of rebel against the rules. A lot of my printmaking is very experimental now that I know the basics.”
Another project that caught my eye was a watercolor paper doll that founder, Jae Valdez. is working on. It’s got a very punk/alternative aesthetic, and when I asked her about it she told me. “It’s almost a way of expressing this personal feeling of playing dress up throughout my life, something that I’ve experienced from the age that I was literally dressing up to now, where it’s like I almost feel like I’m a character. I want to kind of encourage people to think about that feeling within their own experiences.”
